Freek van Heerden

Freek van Heerden

Freek holds a master’s degree in chemical engineering and has more than 40 years’ experience. Freek has been involved in gas- and coal-to-liquids projects since 1998. He was the engineering manager on the Qatar and Nigeria GTL plants during the front-end loading phase. During this time, various other GTL and CTL studies were also undertaken in areas like the North Sea, Australia, Angola, Canada, USA, India, China and South Africa. Starting in 2006 he was the technical director responsible for the clean fuels EURO II implementation in Secunda as well as the later EURO IV Concept studies both for Secunda and the Natref refinery. The upgrading of the Temane / Pande Central processing facility, the ROMPCO pipeline and the expansion of the Secunda CTL plant to accommodate the additional natural gas was also concluded under his technical guidance.

Freek is co-author of a book on programme management.

Jurie holds a BEng(Chem)Hons from the University of Pretoria and an MBA. He has more than 37 years of engineering, operations management and functional management experience. He started, developed and managed the Environmental & Risk Engineering group in Sasol Technology for more than 14 years. He is the co-author and editor of two books on project and programme management.

Christine Render

Christine holds a PhD in Chemical Engineering from the University of Leeds (UK) and is a Chartered Engineer. She has 35 years’ experience in the energy and petrochemical industry, specifically in front-end concept engineering, process design and multi-disciplinary engineering management. Christine was a member of the Group Management team of Sasol (Executive Manager Engineering) and has held several directorships.

She has been involved in the front-end development & design of many of Sasol’s plants, as well as the PetroSA GTL plant in Mossel Bay, South Africa. She started up and led Sasol’s Concept Development function for more than 10 years, accountable for prefeasibility and feasibility studies on Sasol’s capital projects. Christine was on the Joint Steering Committee of the Sasol China CTL project through prefeasibility & feasibility as well as playing a pivotal role in early development of Sasol’s GTL projects (Oryx, Canada, USA etc).

Gavin is a graduate chemical engineer with 27 years’ experience in R&D, process engineering, manufacturing systems and information technology. He has extensive experience in an operating business in the application of information technology in process manufacturing, mining and energy environments. For several years he was the CIO for AECI Ltd, a diverse chemicals Group with 6000 employees. He founded a software business focused on enterprise software, and held various executive and director roles in this regard. He was also the director of product strategy for Adapt IT, a fast growing publicly listed technology company with clients in 17 countries.

Gavin is a member of the South African Institute of Directors and writes regular articles on IT in manufacturing published in South African Instrumentation and Control.

Deryck Coetzer

Deryck Coetzer has more than 33 years of experience in projects at various stages of development in the petrochemical industry.   He started his career in the Sasol Research and Development Departments and then moved on to the production environment, honing his skills in plant optimisation and troubleshooter.  During these years, he developed extensive experience in Lurgi Dry Bottom Gasification technology as well as utility systems.  Deryck has spent almost 10 years in front-end engineering of various projects.  He spent many years of his career developing desktop studies and pre-feasibility studies concentrating on the technical integration of various business units and value chains in the Sasol organization.  Through these actions he spear headed the Sasol Wax expansion project in 2007 and became the Technical Director of this major project from conception through execution until the end of 2014 when he left Sasol employment.
